Fines and Fees Justice Center

The Fines & Fees Justice Center (FFJC) is a national center for advocacy, policy, information, and collaboration on effective solutions to the unjust and harmful imposition and enforcement of fines and fees in the criminal legal system. FFJC’s mission is to end abusive collection practices, eliminate fees in the criminal legal justice system, and make fines proportional to the offense and the individual. FFJC works with impacted communities, advocates, and justice system stakeholders to create an equitably-funded justice system that treats individuals fairly and ensures public safety.

Position Summary

The Deputy Director will be responsible for centering the experiences of people directly harmed by fines and fees to advance New York State campaigns for fines and fees reform. Under the direction of the New York State Director, the Deputy Director will work with people impacted by fines and fees to identify harmful policies and potential solutions; build relationships with key stakeholders, including legislators, organizations and community members; co-lead statewide and local coalitions; and research, write, and manage projects to advance campaigns for fines and fees reform in New York. Working with FFJC’s research team, the Deputy Director will also identify, collect, and analyze data on the imposition and collection of fines and fees in New York to understand the impacts on individuals, and on local and state governments.

The Deputy Director will also work with the State Director and partner organizations to organize campaign events, and develop talking points and advocacy materials.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Support FFJC’s New York State Director and New York campaign by representing FFJC at stakeholder meetings, outreach to build and strengthen coalitions, and research, write and strategize for coalitions

In collaboration with the State Director, align New York State campaign activities with organizational values of centering people directly harmed by fines and fees

Independently research, synthesize and maintain technical, academic, and court data

Organize lobbying and educational activities, including trainings

Serve as a spokesperson advocating for fines and fees reform across New York state

Monitor and communicate relevant legislative activity and report findings to New York State Director

Summarize research findings, develop talking points and other campaign materials

Other duties as assigned by New York State Director

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate degree in public policy, political science, criminal justice, journalism or other relevant issue areas, and at least one year of experience in research, communications, or advocacy (focus on criminal justice, economic justice or racial justice preferred) OR college degree and at least three years of relevant experience

Excellent writing skills, with ability to write persuasively for a variety of different audiences

Excellent investigative and research skills

Project management skills

Interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with diverse communities including across race, socioeconomic status, religion, gender expression, sexual orientation, education levels etc.

Demonstrated ability to think strategically about criminal justice reform

Sense of humor

Team player

Ability to work independently and remotely

Commitment to develop as a leader in response to feedback and mentoring

Those who have been personally impacted by the criminal legal system are strongly encouraged to apply

Knowledge of New York politics, courts and/or budget is a plus

Spanish language ability is a plus

Compensation

$65,000 – $75,000 with a generous vacation and leave policy, and health, dental, and vision insurance, and transportation benefits.
